ABOUT WEIRDO
WEIRDO documents and celebrates the experiences, perspectives and contributions of South Asian people in alternative subcultures around the world – the punks, goths and weirdos.
South Asian people who are part of alternative subcultures remain largely underrepresented in the mainstream, alternative, and South Asian spheres, notably, in fashion, beauty and music. Therefore, WEIRDO aims to expand the one-dimensional representation of South Asian people beyond the stereotypes through essays, interviews, photography, events, collaborations and more.
Founded in 2019, the first print issue – Identity and Community in British Subculture - was released in March 2020 and was a collection of essays, interviews, artwork and photography from the South Asian diaspora in the UK. The Music Issue was the second print issue, released in November 2021, and highlights the contributions of South Asian people in alternative music. In 2023, their podcast ‘We Are The Weirdos, Aunty-ji’ was launched to share the stories of South Asians musicians to new audiences.
